Adventureland Movie Review by Hiram

I was very fortunate to get a DVD copy of Adventureland for pre screening. While the movie didn’t get much notoriety in theaters, it’s definitely a great movie to own. The movie stars Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart (Twilight), Ryan Renolds (Van Wilder, Wolverine Origins), Kristen Wiig (SNL, Knocked Up), and of course our very own Bill Hader (SNL, Superbad).

The movie premises around James Brennan (Eisenberg), a young college student whose summer vacation is canceled and is now forced to make money at the local Adventureland amusement park. While there he meets Em (Stewart), who helps turn his summer from bleak to memorable.

To say the least, I was pleasantly surprised on how well I enjoyed the movie. Thanks to the directing of Greg Mottola (Superbad), Adventureland is fast paced and grabs your attention from start to finish. It’s a different type of comedy, far more subtle than that of Mottola’s other movie, Superbad. However, it stands on its own merit with a lot of heart.

What made the movie interesting for me was the use of it’s music, which consisted of an array of 80’s hits, along with a great performance by Kristen Stewart. Watching her both in Adventureland and her previous movie Twilight, it’s not hard to see why she appeals to so many people. She is definitely someone to look out for in years to come.

As for our SNLers Kristen Wiig, and Bill Hader, they no doubtedly provide a lot of the comic relief for the movie. They run the operations of the park and while their characters are odd, you can’t help but love them.

The DVD includes bonus features such as deleted scenes, commentaries, picture music selection, and lots more.
